Frequently Asked Questions?

Answer: When healthy couple is having unprotected intercourse for 1 year (in women <35 years of age) and not able to be pregnant naturally, it is described as infertility. If woman’s age is >35 years, then 6 months is the limit of unprotected intercourse to label couple as infertile. 85% of couples conceive in 1st year of trying and after 2 years of trying approximately 90% of couples conceive naturally. 1 out of 7 couples is facing infertility now a days.

Answer: After 1 year of regular sexual activity (2-3 times a week) without using any form of protection against pregnancy, couple is not able to conceive then it is necessary to consult a fertility specialist to discuss about routine fertility tests (AMH, partner semen analysis, and tubal patency check) and lifestyle factors. If all the tests are found normal, then couple can be given another year of trying naturally.

Answer: Fertility potential diminishes with age and this decline is abrupt after the age of 35. This decline continues until age 51 (range: 40-55yrs). It is observed that at the time of puberty a girl has approximately 500,000 eggs, 25,000 at age 37 and less than 500 at the time of menopause. To know the fertility potential or remaining numbers of eggs in ovary, 2 important tests are done: AMH (anti Mullerian hormone) and AFC (antral follicle count). These both tests are independent of each other. AMH is done on any day of cycle, while AFC is done using transvaginal ultrasound and measure the numbers if antral follicles in each ovary. FSH, Estradiol and inhibin are not reliable tests to check the eggs reserve.

IVF (In vitro fertilization) may be required for couples who face fertility challenges, such as blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders or low sperm count. Couples who do not face these challenges may be able to conceive naturally without the need for IVF. However, the decision to undergo IVF ultimately depends on individual circumstances, factors responsible for infertility, and medical advice.Couples with milder problems of fertility can conceive with other fertility treatment like ovulation induction, IUI.

IVF with PGT offers the opportunity to select the healthiest embryo by conducting genetic testing, which can result in a higher chance of a successful pregnancy and reduce the need for additional treatments. It will also reduce the cost and overall duration of the treatment. In addition, PGT can provide options for family balancing and choosing the gender of the baby. However, the decision to undergo IVF with PGT should be based on personal circumstances, personal choice and medicaladvice.
